The plan to print my own version of The Hunting of the Snark had lain dormant for many years. Fired by my enthusiasm for Viscount Carlow’s use of Koch=Antiqua’s oberlängen und großbuchst in some of his Corvinus Press books, the title page almost set itself, as did the rest of the text in 24d Koch Antiqua.
I was also determined that the illustrtations should be wood engravings: I was most fortunate to have the enthusiastic support of Ian Corfe-Stephens who cut eight blocks and four tail-pieces.
63 copies were bound by Ludlow Bookbinders. The source of patterened paper is described in the item entitled ‘Hornfels’ in the ’News’ section. Priced at £150 it sold out in two weeks.
