The Reading Room Press

Disregarded for years on the press room shelves have been three boxes of Monotype Ornaments which came to me from the Kit Cat press of the late Kenneth Hardacre. They were designed by the late Peter Burnhill in the early 60s, an act on the surface somewhat out of character for an academic and erudite typographer. I can't think of a better word than 'seduced' to describe my belated fascination with this type. Encouraged by his friend Robert Kinross of the Hyphen Press a book has emerged, Peter Burnhill ~ An Excursion. The earlier 18pt border 'Carnival' has been cast for me at the Effra Press. A visit to Burnhill's daughter allowed privileged access his personal archive, in particular his work as a wood engraver. From this visit four blocks, engraved by Peter, emerged; the images here printed from the wood.
